Ynez Johnston is a well-listed California painter, etcher, and sculptor known for her "jigsaw" complex imagery reminiscent of primitive design.

Born in 1920 in Berkeley, California, she studied at the University of California with Erle Loran, Margaret Peterson, and Worth Ryder. The display of her paintings at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City New York in 1951 launched her career, after which she was exhibited at the Metropolitan, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, The Guggenheim and the Whitney Museum.

Her paintings have sold at auction for over $10,000.00.
