This is a rare and sought after tonalist work by well-listed California painter Walter Alexander Bailey.

Born in Kansas in 1894, he studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and was a pupil of Thomas Hart Benton and Randall Davey. From 1917 until 1927, he was the editor and art director for the Kansas City Times. In the 1940's he worked as a scenic and motion picture artist in Hollywood, and from 1950 until 1967 he was the art director of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. He died in 1989.
