Tobias Schneebaum is a fascinating, listed Modernist painter, illustrator, writer, and anthropologist.

Born in New York City, New York, he studied with Rufino Tamayo at the Brooklyn Museum of Art following his graduation from the City College of New York. He studied at Yaddo in 1953 and won a Fullbright Scholarship in 1955 to travel and paint in Peru.

He lived with indigenous tribes in the Peruvian Amazon and in West Papua, New Guinea. A movie documentary of his experiences is entitled, "Keep The River On Your Right". He died in 2005.
