Born Gladys Vera Evans in 1910 in New York City, she was educated at Syracuse University for her B. A., and Columbia University for her M. A.

After moving to California, she studied with Millard Sheets, earning an M. F. A. at Claremont. She married Dr. John O'Toole in 1938 and moved to Riverside, California, where she was one of the founders of the Riverside Art Museum and the Friends of the Riverside Inn.

Her art has been exhibited internationally. She died in 2000.
