Michael Frary is a very well-listed painter, architect, educator, and writer whose ground breaking worked changed the face of the Modernist movement in the United States.

Born in Santa Monica, California in 1918, he earned his MFA from USC and then continued his studies at the Grande Chaumiere in Paris, France. He returned to the United States and worked in the Los Angeles film studios before moving to become the artist-in-residence and faculty chairman for the San Antonio Art Institute, followed by a faculty position at the University of Texas at Austin.

Michael Frary had more than two hundred one-man shows during his career, and exhibited at many museums including the Smithsonian, the Whitney, LACMA and PAFA. He died in 2005.
