Mark Tobey is one of the Northwest's premier painters and printmakers, born in Wisconsin in 1890.

He began his career as an illustrator in Chicago, Illinois, before moving to New York and developing a similar style to Jackson Pollacks', but predating it. He relocated to Seattle, Washington in 1938, where his style further developed and his fame issued.

His work is in many museum collections throughout the world.

He died in 1976.
