Lynd Ward is a well-known illustrator and pioneer of the graphic novel art form.

Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1905, he was a child prodigy, and studied fine arts at Columbia Teachers College and at the National Academy of Graphic Arts in Leipsig, Germany. He published his first "wordless novel" God's Man in 1929and was a celebrated illustrator of books and magazines for the rest of his career. He died in 1985.
