Born in 1904, Juan de'Prey is a well-listed self taught painter primarily known for his portraits, genre scenes and landscapes.

While his work is often compared to that of the more well-known Mexican masters, he is sometimes referred to as the "Puerto Rican Gauguin". His work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museo del Arte in Puerto Rico as well as in other galleries and museums in the Americas. de'Prey relocated to New York City in 1929 where he lived up until his death in 1962.
