Jose Garcia Ortega is a listed Spanish painter and printmaker, born
in Arroba de los Montes in 1921.
His family moved to Madrid in 1934, and as a young boy
he took an interest in art. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, Ortega was
fifteen years old, and became a protest artist. He joined the Communist Part
in 1947 and was sentenced to ten years in prison, but was later acquitted in
1952. At that poi t he attended the National School of Graphic Arts and
became a member of the Club of Fine Arts in Madrid.
He received a scholarship from the French government to
study at the School Estienne and the School of Fine Arts in Paris, France.
His art has received numerous rewards and was exhibited widely in Europe, as
well as Canada and the United States. He died in 1990.
