James O'Brien is a painter. illustrator, and printmaker from the Washington D. C. area.

Born in 1917 in Newtonville, Massachusetts, he showed an early interest in art and technical drawing, studying at MIT and the Washington Workshop of the Arts. His major focus in painting was for urban subjects in the Washington D. C. area. He exhibited his work at the Brooklyn Museum, the Corcoran Gallery, the American Art League, and the Rehoboth Art League as well as several galleries in Washington DC. He died in 1996.
