A well-listed painter, printmaker, and sculptor known for his modernist leaning genre, landscapes and harbor view compositions, Herman Roderick Volz was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1904. He first displayed his artistic bent when working for his grandfather who was a master craftsman in decorative arts. Classically trained in Europe, he moved to San Francisco, California in 1933, and in 1939 painted murals in the Federal Building on Treasure Island while working for the WPA arts project. His works were exhibited at the Parks Salon, the Cracker Art Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art and the Golden Gate International Expo of 1939. According to his widow, this was his last painting in 1990, completed just before he died.
