Ednah Root is a listed California
painter, sculptor and art philanthropist.
Born in 1917 in New York City,
New York, she studied at the Grand Central School of Art,
the New York School of Fine and Applied Art, and the Art
Students League. She studied under Arshile Gorky and George
Grostz and exhibited her works on both American Coasts.
The heir to the Simplicity Pattern
Company, she established the Ednah Root Curatorship of
American Paintings at the San Francisco Fine Arts Museum.
Her works were exhibited at the Whitney
Museum of American Art in New York City, and the Desert
Museum in Palm Springs, California. She died in 1987.
