Carlos Cortez was a poet, muralist, and graphic artist who was born in 1923 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to a German mother and Mexican father.

He was closely linked to the Industrial Workers of the World, and in the 19709's he joined the Hispanic Mural movement in Chicago, Illinois.

This poster was made in honor of Joe Hill (1879 - 1915), who was a Swedish born poet, cartoonist, union organizer, and itinerant worker in the United States. He was executed in 1915 in Salt Lake City, Utah, following a controversial murder trial for a crime he is widely believed to have been innocent of, but was a scapegoat for being an itinerant worker and union organizer.

Carlos Cortez' works are in several museum collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, the Smithsonian in Washington DC, and the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum in Chicago, Illinois. He died in 2005.
