Born in 1884 in Russia, Ben Benn was a well-listed painter who was known
as a pioneering modernist painter. He was best known for his restrained use
of intensive Fauvist colors.
He emigrated with his family to New York City, New York
in 1894. Influenced by the work of Cezanne, Ben Benn was a pupil at the
National Academy of Design in New York as well as the Art Students League.
His works were widely exhibited in such venues as Columbia University,
Whitney Museum, Corcoran Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and MoMA, among others.
He died in 1983.
